REPORT :
The penultimate round of Central Coast Rugby Union was played in beautiful clear weather and the round saw some gripping games of rugby. With one competition round to go after this, things are certainly hotting up, leading into the Finals Series in September.
Avoca Beach hosted Warnervale at Heazlett Park and Avoca Beach was able to outlast the Razorbacks by 28 points to 15. Avoca Beach got away to the better start and it was not long into the match that the home team had crossed for their first try. In fact, Avoca Beach maintained this attack and they soon followed this up with a second try. The first half was controlled by Avoca Beach and they were able to go to the halftime break leading by 22 points to 5. It was a handy lead and one that assured them of ultimate success. The second half was a far more even affair. In fact, the Razorbacks were able to outscore the home team by 10 points to 6, but all the damage for the visitors had been done in the first half. Best players for Avoca Beach were centre Liam Jenkins, No.8 Thomas Murphy, winger Shaun Townsend, who crossed for 2 tries, and lock Matt Anderson. The Razorbacks had several good players but none were better than prop Mackenzie Zammit, and flankers Matt Martin and Rob Peden. Peden crossed for 2 tries in the match. The win sees Avoca Beach maintain their undefeated record for the season with just the one match to go. They are also locked on equal points with Terrigal, who they play next Saturday in the final round of the competition.
Gosford travelled Woongarrah Oval to meet Warnervale in a match that was a precursor to the Minor Semi-final in two weeks time. It was hard hitting affair from start to finish but it was Warnervale who won one the day by 28 points to 19. Warnervale got away to a great start and they certainly took control of the match very early on. They crossed for their first try within the first 4 minutes, and they followed it with two further tries in the first half. It was a great performance by the home side in the first 40 minutes. They were strong in the forwards and then had the backs to take full advantage of the great platform being laid by the forwards. Warnervale went to the halftime break leading by 21 points to nil. To Gosford’s credit, they certainly tried to bridge the gap in the second half. They did outscore Warnervale by 19 points to 7 in the final 40 minutes but it was all too late for the visitors. The win more or less assures Warnervale of fourth spot on the competition ladder but was also a great result for the home team in view of their impending clash in two weeks time. Gosford will take a lot however from their resurgence in the second half. Best players for Warnervale were No.8 Tevita Piukala, fullback Isaiah Niumata, who was dangerous every time he touched the ball, and five-eight Sione Braxton. Best for Gosford were flankers Hugo Pike and Jackson Steinbeck, and halfback Ben Shelley.
Hornsby met Terrigal at The Haven Oval and it was Terrigal who proved too strong on the day, running out victors by 45 points to 5. It was Terrigal in control right from the opening whistle. They were able to cross for an early try but they continued to control proceedings for the remainder of the match. Terrigal went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to nil so already at that stage they appeared to have victory cemented. Terrigal then followed this up with a further 19 points in the second half while Hornsby were only able to respond with a lone try. Hornsby never stopped trying all day but just found the Terrigal outfit too strong on the day. Best players for Terrigal were centre Harry Hughes, and flankers Sam Kenny and Elekano Laupolo, while flanker Chris James, winger Jack O’Connor and lock Blake Davenport put in the best efforts for Hornsby. Terrigal maintain their spot at the top of the competition ladder but their match next week against the undefeated Avoca Beach will decide the Minor Premiership for 2023.
The Lakes proved too strong for Lake Macquarie in their clash at Walters Park, Boolaroo, running out victors by 47 points to 19. The Lakes, in their final match of the year, were quickly in control in the match and by halftime had leapt to a 17 points to 0 lead. Both teams were playing committed rugby but it was The Lakes who were posting the points on the scoreboard. The Lakes continued to control things early in the second half and it was not too long before they had jumped to a 40 points to nil lead. To Lake Macquarie’s great credit, the home team finished strongly and were able to cross for 3 tries in the final periods of the match. Best players for The Lakes were flanker Seth Olsen, hooker Navitalai Naduguduivalu, centre Lathan Hutchinson-Walters and prop Ben Kaifa. Lake Macquarie was best served by halfback Matias Furno, prop Nathan Keogh and No.8 Ken Villamu, who crossed for two individual tries.
The Women’s 10’s competition matches continued today. Terrigal, The Lakes and Avoca Beach all recording significant victories on the day and these three victors are all locked into the Final Series.
