REPORT :
The 2019 Central Coast Rugby season continued with some very exciting matches. All matches were relatively close with the final result still being very much up for grabs at the respective halftime breaks.
In the Match of the Round at Kariong Oval, Terrigal defeated Kariong by 26 points to 10. This match was fast flowing, with play going from one end of the field to the other yet at the same time the physical contact was not to be denied. It was a very good exhibition of rugby. The opening stages of the clash were very even. Both teams had periods of attack followed by some intense defensive work. However neither side was able to make a breakthrough on the scoreboard. Both teams went close to scoring but both were denied by some hard physical defence. Terrigal did open the scoring in the 22nd minute with a penalty goal to fullback Jayden Woolley. This penalty goal was quickly followed by the first try of the match 3 minutes later. This Terrigal try resulted from some sustained forward pressure which saw Josh Vainikolo crash over for the first of his two tries. Suddenly, after a very intense and hard fought opening 20 odd minutes, Terrigal had jumped to a handy 10 points to nil lead. A further penalty right on halftime saw the visitors increase their lead to 13 points to nil. The first half was quite even on the paddock but it was Terrigal who had the advantage on the scoreboard. Terrigal went further ahead after just a few minutes at the start of the second half. They had jumped to a 18 points to nil lead with most of the second half to go. It did seem quite ominous for Kariong at that stage. However the home side did not surrender. Kariong played some very good rugby in that final quarter of the match. They went close to scoring on a couple of occasions, and on occasions turned down some shots at goal. A further try and penalty saw Terrigal all but secure the match when they led by 26 points to nil with about 15 minutes to go. Terrigal has some very good players in the match. Best for them were forward Josh Vainikolo, who scored 2 tries, fullback Jayden Woolley, hooker Ethan McInnes, and flanker Sam Kenny. However it was to prove a very good all round team performance. Kariong were rewarded in the final 10 minutes with two pleasing tries. This made the final score 26-10. Kariong were best served by No.8 Phil Brown, flanker Brent Bovis, and five-eight Mitch Clay. Both teams will take a lot from this match. Terrigal had secured two wins in the first two rounds, while Kariong, in their first hit out of the season, know they will get stronger and more than likely will be a major force this year in the competition.
Gosford also secured their second win of the season when they defeated The Lakes by 22 points to 18 at Woongarrah Oval. Gosford got away to the better start and at the halfway break had cemented a 17 points to 5 lead. This seemed almost enough to get them the win but the second half was to prove a real nail biter. Whereas Gosford controlled much of the first half it was The Lakes who stormed back into the match for much of the second half. The Gosford backline did play very well in the first half and it was due much to their play that the team were able to post 17 points. However the start of the second half saw The Lakes play some good rugby. They actually worked themselves back into the lead and with ten minutes to go had taken the lead by 18 points to 17. The match was certainly up for grabs. However it was Gosford who secured the match winner with about 5 minutes to go when Jackson Steinbeck crossed for the vital try. It was an exciting match throughout and both sides know they could have won this match. But it was Gosford who have now recorded two out of two wins to have a very good start to the season. Best for Gosford were Josh Reid, Alec Corcoran and Jonah Manuao. The Lakes were best served by Paul Wilson, lock Peni Raulini and Blake Dingham, who crossed for a try.
Avoca Beach held on to record a pleasing win over Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval by 32 points to 20. In what proved quite an even battle throughout it was the Avoca Beach team who were always just in front on the scoreboard. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to 12 and both sides knew they had real chances of victory at that stage. However it was Avoca Beach who maintained that lead and even increased it a little during the second stanza. Best player for Avoca Beach was halfback Julian Bacigalupo, who was everywhere in attack and defence, and who scored a great try. He was well supported by Mitch Jacob, and Jake McPhie, who crossed for two personal tries. Woy Woy were always in the match but were simply unable to bridge the gap. Best for the home side were Cameron Graham, Robert Kinley, and Jovesa Kunawave, who scored a very good try.
Ourimbah did enough to defeat Hornsby at Ourimbah Rugby Park by 33 points to 10. The first half saw a far better effort by Hornsby, and Ourimbah only led at the break by 14 points to 3. Ourimbah were always in control in this match but Hornsby did not make things easy for them. Ourimbah did score 5 tries to one and that was a fairly good indication of the flow of the match, but Hornsby would be pleased with their effort against last year’s Premiers, particularly after last week’s disappointing result. Best players for Ourimbah were No.8 Ross McKean, winger Daniel Ford and lock Josefa Biu who crossed for another 2 tries in the match. Hornsby put in a great effort and all players contributed for a good team effort.
In the President’s Cup, Warnervale hung on to defeat The Entrance by 13 points to 10 at Woongarrah Oval.
Women’s 7’s rugby continued with some great efforts by various teams. Terrigal and Avoca Beach remain undefeated in their matches. Hornsby got their first win of season against Ourimbah, while the Kariong team had their first ever matches in the competition. It is all building for a great season in Women’s 7’s rugby.
