REPORT :
The Match of the Day at The Haven Oval saw a closely fought encounter throughout. On a clear cool evening Terrigal were able to hang on to defeat Avoca Beach by 22 points to 18. The match was played before a huge crowd and the clash lived up to all expectations. Terrigal opened the scoring early with a try to take a 5 points to nil lead. This remained the score line for the first quarter of the match before Avoca Beach were able to respond with a penalty goal to reduce the lead to 5 points to 3. The remainder of the first half was hard fought and intense, and the only points scored during that time were 4 penalty goals – 3 to Terrigal and one to Avoca Beach. The halftime score of 14 points to 6 showed that the match was very much up for grabs. Terrigal had the better of the start of the second half. They were able to cross for their second try and also posted a further penalty goal. At the midway points of the second half Terrigal had jumped to a handy 22 points to 6 lead and it seemed at that stage that they would go on with it. However Avoca Beach were not to be outdone. The visitors actually had the better of the finals stages of the match and were coming home at full steam. Avoca Beach were able to cross for their two tries late in the match and suddenly the match was there for the taking. The score had been reduced to 22 – 18, but Terrigal were able to hang on to record the victory. Both teams will take a huge amount from this contest. The fact that both teams scored two tries apiece showed there was not too much between these two teams. Best players for Terrigal were centre Harry Hughes, flanker Sam Kenny, lock Macklin Collins and prop Harry Gray. Best for Avoca Beach were centre Mitch Jacob, in his 100th First Grade match for the club, hooker Cooper Elliott and No.8 Fionn Henderson-Foley.
The northern derby between The Lakes and Warnervale was hard fought from start to finish. Warnervale proved too strong on the day and ran out winners by 36 points to 26. The match was moved to Woongarrah Oval because of the damp conditions at Slade Park so immediately The Lakes lost their home ground advantage. The match opened up very evenly and remained that way for much of the match. The Lakes crossed for a try first but Warnervale were quick to respond with their own try. The first half went point for point but it was Warnervale who went to the halftime break leading by the narrow margin of 15 points to 12. Both teams would have felt at that stage that the match was theirs for the taking. However it was Warnervale who took a further lead early in the second half. They jumped to a 22 points to 12 lead before The Lakes hit back to make the score 22- 19. It was at this stage that Warnervale surged ahead again and jumped to a winning lead of 36 points to 19. The Lakes did score late in the match but Warnervale had won the battle of the northern clubs. Both teams proved they will be in the action later in the year. The win takes Warnervale to the top of the competition ladder. Best players for Warnervale were centre Sione Piukala, lock Lachlan Natapu, flanker Kye Haslam and five-eight Ben Butler. The Lakes were best served by prop Tim Poese, who crossed for 2 tries, and hooker Ben Kaifa.
The Razorbacks hit some good form to defeat Hornsby at Pennant Hills Oval No.1 by 31 points to 19. The Razorbacks got away to a great start in the match and it was not long before they had jumped away to a 14 points to nil lead. It did seem ominous for the home team Hornsby at that early stage. However Hornsby hit back. They were able to respond and were able to square up the scores by the halftime break, when the scores were locked at 14 points apiece. However in the second stanza it was the Razorbacks who stamped their authority on the match. Through some pleasing rugby the visitors were able to jump to a handy 31 points to 14 lead late in the match. Hornsby did respond with a late try but it was all too late. Best players for the Razorbacks were halfback Jarrod Grange, and locks James Mann and Josefa Biu. Hornsby was best served by five-eight Hunter Bird and flanker Epeli Kauvka.
Gosford recorded their first win of the season when they accounted for Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval by 26 points to 7. Woy Woy opened up the scoring early in the match and it was just the start they wanted. However this converted try lead was not to last long. Gosford were quick to respond with their own try when their five-eight Ben Shelley made a brilliant 70 metre dash to the try line. This made the score 7 all and this was to remain the score at the halftime break. The game was obviously very evenly matched at that stage. Gosford however were gradually able to make some vital inroads in the second half and were able to cross for a further three tries in the second half to secure the victory. At the same time Woy Woy were unable to improve on the halftime score. The win was a huge boost for the Gosford club after what had been a difficult few years. Best players for Gosford were five-eight Ben Shelley, prop Suili Hakalo and flanker Hugo Pike. Woy Woy were best served by flanker Jazper Doak-Stride, No.8 Tali Sitani and centre Corby Delaforce.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. All 6 teams were in action and the skill level across the three matches was exemplary. Comfortable wins were recorded by Hornsby and Terrigal, and The Lakes hung on to defeat Warnervale in close one.
