REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with Round 6 action across the Central Coast. The season is now a third of the way through the season and things are beginning to take little shape in terms of the competition ladder. However, there is still a long way to go.
The Match of the Day at Heazlett Park saw Avoca Beach and Gosford play out a quite one-sided contest in which Avoca Beach defeated Gosford by 43 points to 10. It was certainly the home team’s day after they started well and continued to play goof effective rugby for the entire 80 minutes. Avoca Beach got away to a good start and it was not long before they had jumped to a handy lead. This was despite Gosford scoring the first try in the match. By halftime Avoca Beach led by 26 points to 5 and even at that stage the writing was on the wall in terms of the result. Avoca Beach were able to post a further 17 points in the second half while Gosford were only able to respond with the single try. Best players for Avoca Beach were centre Michael Houssenloge, who crossed for 2 tries, prop Matt Ritchie, halfback Mitchell Magrath and centre Alex Halls. Gosford had several good performers but none were better than halfback Ben Shelley, lock Mitch Parker and five-eight Josh McGlynn. Avoca Beach remain undefeated and continue their great start to the season, while Gosford would be most disappointed with the result.
Terrigal recorded a huge victory at The Haven Oval when they defeated Woy Woy by 92 points to 7. Terrigal took the lead very early and then continued to pile on the points for the entire match. There was no stopping them from start to finish. Terrigal maintained their undefeated record and no team has threatened them so far this year. Terrigal had leapt to a 38 points to nil lead at the halftime break and at that stage they never looked like being threatened or defeated. Terrigal posted a further 54 points in the second stanza while Woy Woy could only score the single converted try. Best players for Terrigal were lock Macklan Collins, winger Blake Irwin, who crossed for 4 individual tries, and fullback Frankie Webber. Woy Woy had no answer to the home side attack but were still well served by flankers Bruce Folau and Casey Woodford and five-eight Corby Delaforce.
The match at Woongarrah Oval saw home team Warnervale record a 47 to 24 points victory over neighbours The Lakes. The first half was a quite even struggle with both teams having numerous chances to posy points. Warnervale were first to score with a converted try but The Lakes soon responded with their own converted try to make the early score 7 all. Later in the first half Warnervale took the ascendancy and were able to cross for a further 2 tries to add to their tally. At halftime Warnervale led by 21 points to 12. It was a handy lead but by no means a safe one. Warnervale scored again early in the second half to lead by 28 points to 12. At this stage the match was an even struggle with both teams able to cross for points in the last quarter of the match, but it was always the home team with their noses in front. It was a most pleasing win for the home team who continue to display good form. The Lakes did push them all the way and were rewarded with a 4 try bonus point. Best players for Warnervale were props Jacob Gaul and Veipueki Siale, No.8 Tevita Piukala, and hooker Kye Haslam. The Lakes were best served by No. 8 Geoff Hiku, lock Savenaca Tubudra, prop Connor Starkey and five-eight Damien Lawson.
Hornsby were at home yesterday at Mark Taylor Oval in their clash with the Razorbacks. The Razorbacks went on to record a 26 points to 7 victory. The Razorbacks opened up the scoring early on to go to a 7 points to nil lead. However, it was not long before Hornsby responded and they squared the match at 7 points apiece. It was then that a serious injury to a Hornsby player delayed the match for quite a while. When play continued, the Razorbacks were able to jump to a handy 26 points to 7 lead by the halftime break. Because of the injury the second half was very much shortened as well. The Razorbacks went on to get the win and were able to secure that vital 4 try bonus point. Best players for the Razorbacks were winger Jye Clack, prop Jordan Clark and No.8 Lachlan Peruch, while for Hornsby their best efforts were put in by flanker Harry Volemost, winger Jack O’Connor, who scored both of Hornsby’s tries, and lock Aaron Duncan.
There were some exciting games in Women’s 10’s matches this weekend, Warnervale, Hornsby and Terrigal recorded vital wins in what is developing into an interesting race to the Finals later in the year.
