REPORT :
The Match of the Day at Ourimbah Rigby Park saw a see-sawing battle from start to finish between the Razorbacks and Warnervale. The match was played in very heavy conditions and the match ended up in a 19 all draw. The first half was a real arm wrestle. There were opportunities to score but there were not too many. In fact, in the first 40 minutes of the match both teams were only able to add two penalty goals each to the scoreboard. The score line of 6 all at the end of the first half was a fair indication of the flow of the match. The second half continued in much the same vein. Neither team was giving much away and it was proving most difficult to post further points. Warnervale took the lead early in the second half with a converted try while Jarrod Grange kicked his third penalty goal for the Razorbacks to allow them to stay in touch. The Razorbacks did cross for 2 tries in the last quarter of the match to square up the match. The Razorbacks did score 2 tries to one but good goalkicking by Warnervale’s Cameron McNamara keep the visitors in touch. Best players for the Razorbacks were No.8 Josefa Biu, and centres Owen Turner and Rob Peden, while for Warnervale the best performers were flankers Kye Haslam and Tevita Piukala, and hooker Cameron McNamara. These two teams showed they will be threats all year and will be in the reckoning at the business end of the season.
The Lakes and Avoca Beach met at Woongarrah Oval in what was another a hard fought and intense battle. Avoca Beach secured the victory by 42 points to 24. The match had been moved to Woongarrah from Budgewoi due to the continuing dampness of Slade Park. Avoca Beach got away to the better start and had crossed for the opening try within the first few minutes. Avoca Beach continued to control things for much of the first half. They crossed for a further two tries in that first half while The Lakes stayed in the picture with their own two tries. Effective goal kicking by Avoca Beach’s Sam Evans maintained a handy distance for Avoca Beach on the scoreboard and Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by a handy 24 points to 10. The Lakes were unable to convert either of their tries. Avoca Beach continued to control things in the early parts of the second half. They were able to jump to 35 points to 10 lead midway through the second half and things were not looking good for The Lakes at that stage. The Lakes did get part way back into the match when they crossed for 2 tries but a late 70 metre try to Avoca Beach sealed the win for the Avoca Beach team. It was an excellent performance by Avoca Beach and the win maintained their position at the top of the competition ladder. Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Michael Hobden, No.8 Matt Anderson and fullback Mitchell Briggs. It has been a difficult year for The Lakes, being unable to train at their home ground, but they showed they do have the potential to trouble all teams this year. Best players for The Lakes were No.8 Paul Sipu, lock Harry Pirini and centre Paul Wilson.
Kariong were able to defeat Gosford at Ettalong Oval by 31 points to 13. It was a good game of rugby and it was not until the second half that Kariong were able to secure the win. The first half was a closely fought battle with both teams playing some very effective rugby. Kariong went to the halftime break leading by the single point – by 7 points to 6. The match was very much up for grabs at that stage and both teams were showing some great skills. Best players for Kariong at this stage were flanker Justin Atkins, lock Taylor Mildren and halfback Scott Hanley. Gosford at the same time were best served by five-eight Ben Shelley, No.8 Jackson Steinbeck, and flankers Chad Sneyd and Hugo Pike. These four experienced players led the younger Gosford team from start to finish. The scores remined very tight until midway through the second half. However, it was Kariong who continued to show their good recent form by taking control in the final stages of the match. The win confirms Kariong’s second spot on the competition ladder while the performance from Gosford showed they are improving as the year goes on.
Terrigal were able to secure a convincing win over Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval, running out winners by 76 pints to 3. It was Terrigal in control for the entire 80 minutes to which Woy Woy had no answer. It was a slow start and the scores were only locked at 3 points apiece early on but very soon after it was Terrigal who soon got control. Terrigal had jumped to a 36 point to 3 lead at the halftime break so the match was in their control even at that stage. Terrigal was able to post a further 40 points to nil in the second half. Woy Woy tried to stop the Terrigal attack but it was proving most difficult. Best players for Terrigal were five-eight Adam Danckert, prop Todd Atkins, centre Harry Hughes and prop Harry Gray. Woy Woy were best served by flanker Jazper Doak-Stride, centre Bruce Folau and halfback Tiraho Pakai.
The Bay President’s Cup team had a very narrow loss to Hornsby, going down by the narrow margin of 19 points to 17.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. Comfortable wins were recorded by Terrigal, Warnervale and Avoca Beach.
