REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season saw several exciting matches yesterday in Round 9 action in local rugby. The season has reached the halfway point of the season and the Top 5 in Premier 1 is quite clear. However, there is still half the season to go.
The Match of the Day at Heazlett Park saw Avoca Beach defeat Terrigal in a see-sawing clash by 30 points to 22. In a match where the lead changed numerous time it was Avoca Beach who outlasted the visitors. The match started off very evenly and with the score at 5 points to 3 in Terrigal’s’ favour it was obvious it was going to be hard fought and tight for the entire 80 minutes, Avoca Beach then took the lead and led by 10 points to 5 before Terrigal responded with a penalty goal. Avoca Beach did score their second try just before the break to lead by 17 points to 8 at halftime. In the circumstances this lead was quite a handy one and would have given the home side much confidence going into the second half. However, it was Terrigal who had the better of the start of the second half and it was not long before they had taken the lead by 22 points to 20. So, at the midway point of the second half it was anybody’s match. However, it was Avoca Beach who finished the stronger with a vital converted try close to fulltime. Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Emile Thomas, No.8 Matt Anderson, five-eight Sam Evans and halfback Mitch Magrath, while Terrigal were best served by fullback Frankie Webber, prop Antonio Cunha, hooker Bailey Platt and lock Macklan Collins. So, it is Avoca Beach who get the win and remain undefeated in the competition but it is Terrigal who are still at the top of the competition ladder by the single point.
Warnervale travelled to Ourimbah Rugby Park to meet the Razorbacks but it was the Razorbacks who got the victory by 35 points to 27. This was another hard fought and closely contested contest. The Razorbacks definitely got the better start and were able to cross for 3 tries before Warnervale were able to trouble the scoreboard. This 19 points to nil lead was just the start they wanted. However, Warnervale fought back. They scored a try and kicked a penalty goal before the break but it the Razorbacks who went to the halftime break leading by 22 points to 8. The second half was a far more even affair. In fact, Warnervale outscored the home team by 19 points to 13 but it was all too late in terms of the scoreboard. Both teams played some excellent rugby but that first half was all the difference in the match. Best players for the Razorbacks were flanker Rob Peden, five-eight Tayne Mann and fullback Ryan Fenning while for the visitors the best performers were centre Sevanaia Nabetelevu, No.8 Tevita Piukala and lock Ben Austine.
Hornsby hosted Woy Woy at Mark Taylor Oval and it was the home team who won on the day by 76 points to 7. The first half was quite an even affair. Hornsby did score first to lead 5 nil but it was Woy Woy who responded quickly and took the lead by 7 points to 5. The remainder of the first half was quite even but it was Hornsby who led at the halftime break by 15 points to 7. However, the second half was all Hornsby. They were able to pile on 61 further points to simply outclass Woy Woy in the second half. Woy Woy had no answer to this attach. It was an excellent performance by Hornsby who are gradually getting back to some really good form. Best players for Hornsby were centre Nick Andersen, who crossed for 5 tries, fullback Jack O’Connor, and five-eight Hunter Bird, who compiled 21 individual points. Woy Woy were best served by flankers Casey Woodford and Atone Reuel, and halfback Tirado Pakal.
Gosford continued their pleasing season with a victory over Lake Macquarie at Gosford Showground by 75 points to 7. It was a very consistent performance by Gosford who were able to score points regularly throughout the match. Gosford led by 33 points to 7 at halftime and then continued on with the points scoring with another 28 points in the second half. The win sees Gosford move into 4th position on the competition ladder. Best players for Gosford were halfback Ben Shelley, hooker Joel Wagner and No.8 Phil Brown while best efforts for Lake Macquarie were put in by prop Connor Radcliffe, halfback Matias Furuno and five-eight Franco Quinones.
There were some exciting games in Women’s 10’s matches this weekend. There were three matches on display. Razorbacks, Terrigal and Hornsby all recorded vital, and quite large, wins in what is developing into an interesting race to the Finals later in the year. Terrigal scored a most convincing win over arch rivals Avoca Beach, but Woy Woy, despite their loss, continue to build excellent numbers.
