REPORT :

In the Premier 1 Minor Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, Avoca Beach outlasted the

Razorbacks to run out victors by 22 points to 15. It was a hard fought contest from start to finish and the match was only decided on fulltime. It was an evenly fought encounter but both teams missed many opportunities to post points during the match. Avoca Beach did open the scoring in the 13th minute when their winger Michael Houssenloge charged down a Razorback’s clearing kick to regather and score. This 7 points to nil lead was against the run of play but what just the start Avoca Beach wanted. The Razorbacks did control much of the territory in the opening 20 minutes but they failed to score on several occasions either through dropped ball or wrong options. They were finally rewarded in the 23rd minute when they crossed for a try to reduce the Avoca Beach lead to 7 points to 5. This 7-5 scoreline was the situation at the halftime break so the match was very much up for grabs at that stage. Both teams would have been frustrated by their efforts in the first half and missed opportunities was a feature of the first half. Avoca Beach increased their lead early in the second half when they kicked a penalty goal to lead by 10 points to 5. This was quickly followed by a second try to Avoca Beach to further increase their lead by 15 points to 5. Things were starting to look very good for them on the scoreboard. The match was getting to the business of the clash and both teams knew their season was on the line. The Razorbacks scored at the 26 minute mark to reduce the Avoca Beach lead to 15 points to 10, and suddenly the tension in the match, and especially in the crowd, began to build. There was plenty of action in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Firstly, Avoca Beach scored a converted try in the 35th minute to go to a handy lead of 22 points to 10. But then the match was opened up again when the Razorbacks crossed for their third try to make the score 22-15 with only minutes left. Avoca Beach were able to hang on to win the match, finishing with them defending close to their own line. Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Matt Anderson, halfback Charlie Crimmings and No.8 Lachlan Thomas. Best for the Razorbacks were flanker Matt Martin, No.8 Rob Peden and halfback Connor Peden. Avoca Beach continue on in the Finals Series and will play in the Preliminary Final in two weeks’ time. The season ends for the Razorbacks in what has been a pleasing year for them.

The match was win by Avoca Beach in the first half. They were able to cross for 4 tries in the opening half and went to the halftime break leading by 25 points to 3. It was a match winning lead. The Razorbacks played much better in the second stanza and actually outscored Avoca Beach in the that half by 12 points to 8. However, it was all too late. Best performer for Avoca Beach were five-eight Harry Mellross, who crossed for two tries, and fullback Harrison McGarry. The Razorbacks were best served by Ashton Hutchinson-Walters who posted 10 of their points. Avoca Beach continue on and will play in the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks time, while the season ends for the Razorbacks.

Kariong were able to win the President’s Cup Minor Semi-final defeating Warnervale by the narrow margin of 21 points to 20. This was a high standard President’s Cup match from start to finish. Neither team deserved to lose. The match was close throughout. Warnervale opened the scoring with an early try and they went to the halftime break leading by 12 points to 7. It was a gripping contest throughout, and at the midway point of the second half the score was Warnervale 15 Kariong 14. Best players for Kariong were prop Graham Porter and hooker Logan Campbell, while Warnervale’s best players were five-eight Matt Hurley and halfback Alby McCausland. The win sees Kariong continue on while the season ends for Warnervale.
