REPORT :
In the Premier 1 Minor Semifinal at Woy Woy Oval, Ourimbah held on to defeat Woy Woy by 36 points to 29. In a repeat of last year’s Grand Final, Ourimbah were able to inflict on Woy Woy the same result. The match started off very slowly but became more and more intense as the game went on.
Both teams went into the clash knowing that a win was essential. The opening 15 minutes of the match saw play go from one end of the field to the other with neither team able to assert any real authority. Woy Woy opened the scoring in the 15th minute when their fullback Alex Moore kicked a penalty goal for them to take the lead by 3 points to nil. However Ourimbah were very quick to respond. In fact within a few minutes a good backline movement saw winger Ton Sheean cross in the corner. A great conversion from touch by flanker Jarrod Grange saw Ourimbah take the lead by 7 points to 3. The clear and cool conditions were allowing an open style of rugby, with a slight breeze across the field causing some distraction for the kickers from both teams. Woy Woy regained the lead at the 30th minute mark when their flanker Alifeleti Atiola was able to cross for an important try. Then once again Ourimbah were very quick to respond when within two minutes they were able to cross for their second try. The game was proving a very even struggle with neither team able to make a significant break on the scoreboard. Ourimbah were able to cross for their third try in the first half when a quick tap from a penalty saw their winger Nathan Gray cross in the corner. Another very good sideline conversion from Jarrod Grange saw them go further ahead just prior to the halftime break. Ourimbah led at that point by 19 points to 8 and things were looking quite good for them. Ourimbah did deserve the lead at that point. They had scored 3 tries to one and had the better set pieces in that period. Their lineout was good and their scrum was proving quite strong.
The second half commenced exactly the same way as the first half. Woy Woy kicked a penalty goal to reduce the lead to 19 points to 11. However a fourth try by Ourimbah straight after saw them take a confident lead of 26 points to 11. It seemed at that stage that Ourimbah were heading to victory, and a comfortable win at that. However it was at this stage of the half that Woy Woy lifted their intensity and started to play some very effective rugby. Their scrum started to dominate and as a result they were gaining some territorial advantage. At the 15th minute several penalty goals were kicked by both teams, however Ourimbah still maintained their lead of 29 points to 17. Both teams had some very good players. For Ourimbah, lock Josefa Biu was strong all day and often made inroads into the position territory. He was very well supported by hooker Clint Guyatt, who often stole some important ball, and forwards Rob Peden and Sam Kearney never took a backward step. Both teams scored converted tries at the midway point of the second half to make the score 36 points 24. It was this stage, in the final 15 minutes of the match, that the best rugby was played by both teams. Woy Woy were best served by centre Wade Hannell, who ran strongly all day, fullback Alex Moore and No.8 Chris Paseka. Woy Woy brought the excitement level to fever pitch when their replacement player Corey Fleming crossed for a try. This made the score 36 – 29 with time running out. Woy Woy knew a converted try would even up the match. Woy Woy attacked continually for the final few minutes and went so close to scoring on a couple of occasions. But it was not to be and Ourimbah were able to hang on for victory. Ourimbah did score 5 tries to 3 and were the better team over the 80 minutes but the result still could have gone either way. Ourimbah continue on to the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks’ time while the Woy Woy season comes to an end.
Avoca Beach scored a resounding win over Terrigal in Premier 2 when they won the Minor Semifinal by 32 points 5. The win may not have been a surprise but certainly the size of the victory was. In a match expected to be an arm wrestle from start to finish, actually saw Avoca Beach in control right from the opening whistle. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to nil and were never to be headed. Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Brad Mitchell and halfback Justin Staben. Terrigal did score a try in the second half but it was just not their day.
Terrigal came from behind to win the President’s Cup Minor Semifinal defeating Woy Woy by 31 points to 24. Woy Woy had a great start to the match and had crossed for 2 tries within the first few minutes. It seemed this 12 nil lead at such an early time in the match would get them home. But it was not to be. Woy Woy led by 12 points to 7 at the halftime break and the match was then up for grabs. Even at the midway point of the second half Woy Woy still led by 24 points to 14 and things were looking good. However two intercept tries to Terrigal winger Josh Bridge was the turning point. With time running out, and scores locked at 24 points apiece, a try in the dying stages saw Terrigal take the win. Best players for Terrigal were five-eight Jono Small, lock Tane Knebel and centre Stephen Bright. Centre Tim Bovis and hooker Christian Hobbs never stopped trying for Woy Woy.
In what proved an evenly fought struggle, Avoca Beach defeated Warnervale in the Under 19 Minor Semifinal by 26 points to 19. Avoca Beach got away to a very good start and led by 13 points to nil early on. However by halftime Warnervale had fought back and had taken the lead by 14 points to 13. It was Avoca Beach who were able to retake the lead in the second stanza even though both teams each scored only the single try in this period. Warnervale did score 3 tries to 2 in the match but the excellent goal kicking by Avoca Beach fullback Connor Kondrat saw them home to victory.
