REPORT:
The 2025 Central Coast Rugby Union season opened up with some excellent games of rugby. The Wyong Leagues Group Premier 1 series of matches saw some interesting results.
The Match of the Day at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw the Razorbacks easily account for Avoca Beach by 52 points to 8. The size of the victory to the home team was a surprise to many. Razorbacks got away to a great start and it was not too long before they had posted points on the scoreboard. They led by 12 points to 3 early on after having crossed for two very good tries. The Razorbacks were always in control, both on the paddock and thus on the scoreboard. In fact, by halftime, they had jumped to a very handy 26 points to 3 lead and they looked like the victors even at that stage. Avoca Beach gave it their all at the start of the second half but it was the Razorbacks’ defence that maintained control of the proceedings. It was the Razorbacks who continued to move the scoreboard and by the midway stages of the second half, they had leapt to a winning 40 points to 3 lead. Avoca Beach did cross for a try late in the match but it was all to no avail. The whole team played well for the Razorbacks but the standouts were fullback Lathan Hutchinson-Walters, who posted 21 personal points, No.8 Lachlan Peruch, flanker Matt Martin and prop Chris Hayles. Best for Avoca Beach were flanker Fionn Henderson-Foley, lock Lachlan Thomas and winger Logan McLoughlin.
The Haven Oval at Terrigal saw a most convincing victory by home team Terrigal over visitors Warnervale. Terrigal defeated Warnervale by 96 points to nil in what was a most dominant performance by the home team. Terrigal were in total control from start to finish and Warnervale simply had no answer to the onslaught. Terrigal posted points regularly throughout the match and by halftime led by 49 points to nil. The match had already been secured by that stage but that did not stop the point scoring in the second stanza. Best players for Terrigal were centre Jayden Woolley, who scored 42 personal points, lock Charles Granger, and halfback Jye Cornish. Warnervale will be keen to get back home next week and regroup. Their best players were winger Atunaisa Turagbeci, prop Veipueki Siale, and lock Jason Peebles. It was a very strong performance by the Terrigal team and showed they will again be a massive threat to the competition again this year.
Woy Woy scored a convincing win over the newly established Gosford/Kariong team at Gosford Showground by 71 points to 6. Woy Woy controlled proceedings for much of the match despite a great effort by the home team. Woy Woy were able to score consistently throughout the contest. The opening stages of the match were quite close however and Woy Woy only led by 14 points to 3 at the midway point of the first half. However, by halftime, they had jumped to a 31 points to 6 lead and things were looking very good for them. Gosford tried everything to get back into the contest but Woy Woy was too strong on the day. Woy Woy got stronger as the match went on and were able to post a further 40 points in the second half. Best players for Woy Woy were No.8 Sete Falekaono, five-eight Harri Williams, the Fleming brothers, Corey and Damien, and centre Jean Besombes, who crossed for three tries. It was a great turnaround for Woy Woy who had a very tough year in 2024. Gosford/Kariong will get stronger and stronger as the season progresses. Best for Gosford /Kariong were prop Richard Harvey, and flankers Ryan Conaghan and Marley Williams.
Lake Macquarie came from behind to defeat Northlakes/The Bay by 35 points to 30 at Walters Park, Boolaroo. This match was a tight one throughout and both teams had their chances of victory. Northlakes/The Bay had the better of the first half. They started well and by halftime had gone to a 18 points to 3 lead. It was a handy break but one that the home team were keen to reverse. At the mid point of the second stanza the score was Northlakes/The Bay 30 Lake Macquarie 22. It was proving a close struggle. Lake Macquarie was able to score a converted try, to reduce the deficit to 30-29, and then they kicked two late penalty goals through their five-eight Brendan Holliday, to take the lead and the match. Best players for Lake Macquarie were halfback Elia Rokotuisiga, centre Ratu Ifereimi Buaserau and lock Rameo Bainivalu. Northlakes/The Bay was best served by No.8 Rafaelo Natovi and halfback Tomasi Saraqara. It was an exciting match which neither team deserved to lose.
The CCRU Women’s 12’s competition commenced with some interesting results. Matches yesterday saw wins to Terrigal, Lake Macquarie, Avoca Beach and Woy Woy.
