REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition flowed into the second half of this year’s competition with some very exciting matches yesterday. Once again the top of the table was turned all around by the results on the day, with teams falling out of the Top Four and others going in.
The Match of the Day at The Haven Oval saw Terrigal defeat Kariong by 22 points 5. It was a hard fought clash from start to finish with the defence from both sides the feature of the day. However it was Terrigal who always had the edge on the scoreboard and had that little bit of ascendancy throughout. Terrigal did do a lot of attacking but it was the Kariong defence that made things so difficult for them. Terrigal opened the scoring early on with a penalty goal to five-eight Aaron Tait. This 3 nil scoreline remained the situation for quite awhile. The first 20 minutes saw both sides having lengthy periods of attack but neither side was able to break through for a five pointer. Terrigal scored the first try of the match. It resulted from a long break by winger Dan Sargeant who passed to supporting fellow winger Dylan Calabria who crossed for the decisive try. The conversion had placed the home side into a handy 10 points to nil lead. This remained the score at the halftime break. Kariong did have their chances but were simply unable to capitalise. The second half opened up with Kariong on continual attack. They sustained this attack for almost 10 minutes at the start of the half but were unable to post any points. This was the turning point of the match. Terrigal kept them out at this stage and were able to go on and keep control in the match. At the 22nd minute of the second half Terrigal No.8 Josh Vainikolo capped off a good team effort to cross for a converted try to make the score 17 points to 0. Both teams were able to score a try each in the final 10 minutes but the victory had been sealed by Terrigal at that stage. Terrigal had several very good players. Their new halfback, Sekope Maea, was strong and most effective all day. He was very well supported by fullback Alec Herridge, flanker Ryan Metcalfe, hooker Ethan McInnes, and winger Dan Sargeant. It was a very good team effort and the result sees Terrigal maintain their undefeated record this season. Kariong put in the very good effort but just could not bridge the gap on the day. The Kariong team was best served by fullback Mitch Clay, No.8 Phil Brown, and flanker Josh Bottero. Kariong will take a lot from this match and know what they have to do to be able to play in the big games at the end of the season.
Woy Woy were too good for Avoca Beach at Heazlett Park and won by 42 points to 27. Woy Woy got away to a great start and scored their opening points in the opening seconds of the match. They were never headed from that point. Avoca Beach played good rugby and did score four tries, but every time they scored points and got close to Woy Woy, the visiting team was able to slip away with their own points and maintain the lead on the scoreboard. Woy Woy led by 22 points to 13 at the half way point and they were able to maintain that lead for the remainder of the clash. This result really shows the topsy turvy nature of this competition at present with all teams capable of defeating each other on the day. The win sees Woy Woy back into the Top Four in what is developing into a very interesting race to the Finals. Best players for Woy Woy were flanker Alifeleti Atiola, who was everywhere all day, while centre Wade Hannell had one of his best games of the season. Avoca Beach were always very close, but a late try to Woy Woy cemented their victory. Best players for the home side were winger Luke Wiseman, fullback Nathan Brown and forward Peter Steele.
Gosford returned to the winner’s list with a pleasing win over The Lakes at Slade Park. Gosford were able to score 5 tries to 2 and that fact alone was a good indication of the flow of the match. The first half was a relatively even struggle with the halftime score only being Gosford 12, The Lakes 7 so the match result was still very much up for grabs at that point. However the second half saw Gosford play the better rugby and they were able to outlast the home side by 22 points to 7 in the second stanza. Gosford had several very good players but none were better than Josh McGlynn who was always dangerous with the ball in hand, and as a result was able to cross for 2 tries. Another to play well was hooker Vince Stewart who was also rewarded with a try. The Lakes were always in there with a chance early on but could not sustain the pressure. Best players for The Lakes were No.8 Glenn Stone and prop Jordan Thompson.
Ourimbah continued their good recent form when they defeated Hornsby at Mark Taylor Oval to the tune of 57 points to 3. Ourimbah were always in charge after an initial onslaught from Hornsby. The home side did open the scoring with a penalty goal for a 3 points to nil lead but from that point it was all Ourimbah. Ourimbah was able to cross for 9 tries to cement their position in the Top Four. Hornsby never gave up and were committed for the entire match. Best players for Ourimbah were Jordan Clark, Brett Cunningham and Matt King, while Hornsby were best served by lock Ed Mills and five-eight Sam White.
In President’s Cup at Joseph Banks Oval, The Entrance and Warnervale played out a hard fought 29 all draw.
