REPORT :
Central Coast Rugby Union completed a good round of hard fought rugby yesterday. The teams now enter the final five weeks of the competition with many teams in contention for Finals Series berths in all grades. The Match of the Day saw Ourimbah cement their Top Four position with a bonus point win over Avoca Beach. Ourimbah defeated Avoca Beach by 33 points to 17 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. Ourimbah got away to a very good start and had taken control of proceedings in the very early stages. Ourimbah had crossed for 2 tries and led by 14 points to nil at this stage. However Avoca Beach, who knew the match was of huge importance, fought back hard and got within 2 points of the home side. With the score at 14 points to 12, it seemed the match could go either way at that stage. Ourimbah were able to cross for a try just prior to halftime and this 19 points to 12 scoreline was the situation at the break. It was such a crucial try in what was proving a very tight encounter. However the second half saw Ourimbah take control and were able to go on with it and score a further 14 points to 5. It was an even struggle but Ourimbah just always seemed to have their nose in front. The final scoreline of 5 tries to 3 was probably a good indication of the overall flow of the match. Ourimbah had several very good players. Halfback Matt King was strong all day and led from the front. He was ably supported by No.8 Sam Kearney and lock Isaac Harding-Davis. Avoca Beach, with this loss, have to win most of their remaining matches if they are to make the Finals this year.
Terrigal maintained their unbeaten run this season although they did not have it all their own way when they defeated Gosford by 17 points to 5 at Gosford Showground. It was a tough, fast and physical encounter throughout and both teams gave it their all. Terrigal started the match very well and had crossed for their first try in the opening few minutes. This 5 points to nil lead remained the score for much of the first half until Gosford were able to respond with their own try. The first half only saw these two tries posted and scores were locked at 5 points apiece at the halftime break. Both teams had played well. Both teams had their chances to post further points but excellent defence was the order of the day. Even though there was plenty of action for the spectators, much of the play was centred around the centre of the field. Best players for Terrigal were locks Phil Heard and Josh Vainikolo, and hooker Ethan McInnes. Gosford also had some very good performances but none were better then five-eight Josh McGlynn and lock Luke Brown. The second half started much the same as the first half with Terrigal scoring a try within the first few minutes of the start of this half. This made the score 10-5. It was a good team try scored by Josh Vainikolo. However there was to be no further points scoring until very late in the match. Terrigal did dominate large stages of the second half but simply were unable to break through the dogged Gosford defence. The match result was sealed in the last 10 minutes of the match when Terrigal centre Dylon Calabria crossed for their team’s third try, and the conversion made the final score 17-5. It was a good match and both teams will take a lot from it. Terrigal know they will have to play better if they are to maintain that undefeated record this season while Gosford will trouble teams from here to the end of the season.
Kariong continued their good recent form with a 31 points to 7 win over Hornsby at Mark Taylor Oval. Kariong were always in control in this match on the scoreboard but Hornsby certainly put in a courageous effort. Kariong got away to a good start and led by 12 points to nil at the halftime break. Hornsby had made their presence felt in the first half and had made the visitors work hard for every point. Kariong continued their good form in the second half and were able to post a further 19 points in that stanza. The final scoreline of 5 tries to one was a good indicator of the flow of the match. Best players for Kariong were halfback Scott Hanley, who was outstanding all match, flanker Josh Bottero, and Phil Brown. Hornsby also had several standout players. These included lock Aaron Duncan, Brian Mudge and tryscorer Mitch Fullager. Kariong sit on equal points with Ourimbah on the competition ladder in what is shaping as a very interesting last few weeks of the season. Hornsby, like Gosford, will trouble teams for the remainder of the season.
Woy Woy entered the Top Four with their 41 points to 12 win over The Lakes at Woy Woy Oval. Woy Woy were always ahead on the scoreboard in this match and deserved the victory. They crossed for 7 tries in what was a great team effort. The first half was quite an even affair and the score at the break was only 12 points to 7 in favour of the home side. However the second half saw Woy Woy go on and record a meritorious win. Best players for Woy Woy were Alifeleti Atiola, Mitch Hyde and Jake Cucek. A feature of the match were the two tries scored by Tevita Tangi-Noa. The Lakes were in the match for quite awhile but faded the longer the match went on. Best players for the visitors were centre Paul Wilson and Peri Raulini.
The Entrance defeated Warnervale by 90 points to 0 at Joseph Banks Oval in President’s Cup.
