REPORT :
The 2024 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with Round 13 in the WLG Premier 1 series of matches.
Warnervale travelled to Gosford Showground to meet Gosford in the penultimate round in Central Coast Rugby. The match saw Warnervale gain victory by 22 points to 13. Warnervale had a great start in the match when they crossed for a converted try within the first 5 minutes of the start of the match. This 7 nil lead was the start they needed. However, Gosford, over the next 15 minutes, did respond on the scoreboard. They were able to kick two successive penalty goals to reduce the Warnervale lead to 7 points to 6. Warnervale in the final period of the first half played some excellent rugby and were able to increase their lead over the remainder of the half. They were able to cross for a further three tries in this period and this went a long way towards cementing the victory. Warnervale went to the halftime break leading by 22 points to 6 and they were controlling things both on the scoreboard and on the paddock. Gosford got back a little at the start of the second half. They were able to cross for their sole converted try and this reduced the score to 22 points to 13. This remained the score for the remainder of the match. Best players for Warnervale were flanker Kye Haslam, five-eight Stefan Collins, fullback Isaiah Niumata and prop Veipueki Siale. Gosford were best served by flanker Taylor Mildren, fullback Sam Underwood and five-eight Jack Shelley. The win sees Warnervale jump into third spot on the competition ladder and their clash next week with Avoca Beach will decide whether they can move further up from there.
Lake Macquarie hosted the Razorbacks at Walters Park, Boolaroo and it was the visitors The Razorbacks who won the day with a 38 points to 17 victory. However, this match was always up for grabs at the halfway mark. The first half was hard fought and physical with both teams giving it their all in that first 40 minutes. The Razorbacks opened the scoring with an early try but it was Lake Macquarie who quickly responded with their own converted try. This 7-5 scoreline in favour of the home team quickly changed. The scores were quickly alternating. First, the Razorbacks took the lead 12-7, then Lake Macquarie regained the lead with their second try, to lead by 14 points to 12. It was proving an eye watering game of rugby. Near halftime Lake Macquarie went further ahead with a penalty goal, before the Razorbacks responded with their third try of the half to square the score at halftime. Both teams went to the halftime break locked at 17 points apiece. There was no movement on the scoreboard for quite a while after halftime. However, the Razorbacks did take control at the midway point of the second half when they were able to post a further three converted tries to jump to a winning 38 points to 17 lead. It was certainly a change from the first half. Lake Macquarie did cross for a late try but it was all too late. The final score was 38-22. Best players for the Razorbacks were flankers Lachlan Peruch and Matt Martin, as well as centre Owen Turner. Lake Macquarie were best served by inside centre Isaako Enosa and five-eight Rhys Cawley. The win sees the Razorbacks leap into second spot on the competition ladder, but with the bye in the final round, other results next week will decide whether they stay there.
The Terrigal and Woy Woy match resulted in a 28 points to nil victory. Woy Woy had to unfortunately forfeit their match to Terrigal.
The CCRU Women’s 12’s competition continued this weekend with three exciting matches. Avoca Beach defeated The Lakes quite convincingly, while the Terrigal and Lake Macquarie recorded important victories.
In the President’s Cup competition, there were some interesting contests. Warnervale defeated The Bay on Friday night, and on Saturday, Avoca Beach, Terrigal and the Razorbacks all recorded victories.
