REPORT :
In another see-sawing day of Central Coast Rugby, the race for the Finals still has not been settled. The final round next Saturday will do that. The only known result in terms of the Finals from the day’s rugby is that Gosford cannot now make the Finals because of their loss to Kariong. Throughout the day scores in all matches chopped and changed, and there was excitement right through to the final whistle at all venues.
The Match of the Day saw Ourimbah defeat Woy Woy at Ourimbah Rugby Park by 29 points to 24. It was a tight struggle throughout. Woy Woy were slightly better in the opening 40 minutes and went to the break leading by 17 points to 13 but there was absolutely nothing between the two teams. The importance of the match was being displayed on the field with huge intensity and commitment from both sides. Tries were being scored consistently but neither team was able to make a complete break on the other on the scoreboard. This tightness of scores added greatly to the pressure. The second half saw Ourimbah take the lead through some more structured rugby and they were able to hold on to this lead for the remainder of the match. Ourimbah crossed for 4 tries in the match thus gaining a bonus point while the visitors were able to cross for three tries. Ourimbah had several very good players on the day. Prop Brett Cunningham had a strong match and led from the front. He was very well supported by inside centre Owen Turner and lock Sam Kearney, who has played some inspired rugby in recent weeks. Woy Woy gave it their all and went very close. Their best players were Kane Burns and Nick Garnett who never stopped trying and gave it their all for the entire match. The win by Ourimbah puts them on 50 points with Avoca Beach and Kariong, while Woy Woy are on 46 points and must win next week and at the same time hope other results help them out. Fortunately for Woy Woy, the leading 4 teams in the competition at present all play each other next Saturday, and this will make for a most nervous week for all concerned.
Kariong defeated Gosford at Gosford Showground by 21 points to 10 and the result sees Kariong maintain their spot in the Top Four and also sees Gosford now unable to make the Final Series. It was a hard fought struggle and it was played in very damp and muddy conditions. Despite this, both teams put on a very good display of open rugby, with plenty of action from start to finish. Kariong opened the scoring with a penalty goal before Gosford crossed for a try to take the lead 5 points to 3. Kariong regained the lead through a penalty goal and then increased their lead with a try, to go to the halftime break leading by 13 points to 5. It was a tough first 40 minutes and at the break both teams knew they were still in the battle. Both teams were only able to score a try apiece in the second half but this allowed Kariong to maintain their lead and hold on to win. Kariong scored three tries to two, but the goalkicking of Kariong half back Scott Hanley proved the difference. Best players for Kariong were flanker Brent Bovis, who scored a try, prop Cory Holwill and half back Scott Hanley. Gosford were best served by five-eight Josh McGlynn, halfback Joel Wagner and flanker Vince Stewart. There was nothing in this match but the result sees Kariong still in contention of a Top two finish. Gosford finished the season strongly and will rue several results early in the season.
Terrigal had to battle all the way to defeat Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval, running out winners by 37 points to 29. Terrigal scored 6 tries to 5 and it was only their final try in the dying minutes of the match that saw them safely home to victory. Warnervale gave them a real and genuine scare. Terrigal controlled the first half and went to the halftime break leading by what seemed a comfortable 19 points to 10 lead. However Warnervale came out in the second stanza and played a hard, physical style of rugby and all but caused an upset result. However Terrigal hung on for another victory. Best players for Terrigal were hooker Ethan McInnes, who was outstanding for the whole game, appearing all over the paddock at all times. He was well supported by prop Nathan Simpson, who scored 2 tries, and No.8 Josh Vainikolo. Warnervale threw everything at Terrigal. They played well, and players such as Ben Butler, Cameron McNamara and Sione Braxton certainly contributed to this great play.
Avoca Beach came from behind to defeat Hornsby at Mark Taylor Oval by 32 points to 13. The first half was a totally even affair with both teams playing some concerted rugby. In fact, Hornsby went to the halftime break leading by 13 points to 12, and things were certainly nervous in the visiting camp at that stage. However a very strong finish by Avoca Beach saw them outplay Hornsby in the second half, and this period saw them post 20 points to nil in that final 40 minutes. It was a reassuring win to the Avoca Beach team and certainly sees them go to the final week of the competition in a position where they can cement a Top Four position this season. Best players for Avoca Beach were fullback Nathan Brown, who posted a personal 17 points, and prop Josh Meadham. Hornsby continued to finish the season strongly and is troubling all opposition teams in the final few weeks of the season. Best players for them were half back Ben Astley, five-eight Sam White, while Ed Mills capped off another good game with a try.
The Lakes secured the Minor Premiership in President’s Cup when they defeated the Entrance by 34 points to 5 at Slade Park.
