REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with some excellent games of rugby played across the coast yesterday. With several games played at different venues because of the rain on Friday, and some in quite damp conditions, the local rugby season certainly became very interesting.
The Match of the Day saw a dour struggle at Ourimbah Rugby Park where the home side Ourimbah got home over visitors Avoca Beach in a close one by 11 points to 5. There was nothing in this match throughout. With the ground conditions not lending itself to open rugby, the struggle became a real arm wrestle. Ourimbah took the lead in this match with a try to No.8 Rob Peden and this score line of 5 points to nil remained the score until almost half time. Ourimbah jumped further ahead right on the break when they kicked a penalty goal to go to the halftime break with the score at Ourimbah 8 Avoca Beach 0. Even though Ourimbah was ahead on the scoreboard there was nothing in this match. Both teams were playing well in the conditions and both were certainly putting pressure on the opposition. Ourimbah were seeing some very good performers on the day. None were better than their lock Josefa Biu, and he was supported by five-eight Daniel Jones. The best players for Avoca Beach were inside centre Mitchell Jacob, winger Toby Marks, who crossed for their try, lock Aiden King and hooker Fionn Henderson-Foley. Avoca Beach actually scored the only try in the second stanza. Avoca Beach crossed for this try while the home side were only able to respond with a penalty goal. However this penalty goal was enough to see them home for victory. Both teams proved they will be around at the end of the year but it was a vital win for Ourimbah while Avoca Beach will be keen to get on the winner’s dais quickly in the next few weeks.
The Lakes hit back after last week’s loss when they easily accounted for Woy Woy by 48 points to 13 at Woongarrah Oval No.1. This match was transferred to Woongarrah and The Lakes were able to get their backline into action on an excellent rugby pitch. The Lakes started strongly right from the kickoff. They had posted two tries very quickly and with an early lead of 10 points to nil, they already seemed to be doing things easy. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by 20 points to 6 and they seemed to have the match in control even at that stage. However Woy Woy was not taking a backward step. They continued to fight back and got close to scoring on several occasions but were unable to break through The Lakes defence. The second half continued in much the same vein. The Lakes continued to cross for regular five pointers and had jumped to a 34 points to 6 lead at the midway point of the second stanza. The Lakes had several good players but none were better than flanker Noah Haliapiapi, hooker Royce Smith, fullback Macui Rauluni, and No.8 Ishaq Kali Meehan. Woy Woy were best served by centres Junior Stowers and Wade Hannell, and loose forwards Corey Fleming and Lapana Vitale. Woy Woy were rewarded with a try late in the game to centre Wade Hannell, but it was The Lakes who finished the stronger by posting a further two tries in final minutes to make the final score 48-13.
In another match that was transferred, Hornsby defeated Gosford by 27 points to 15. This match was transferred from Mark Taylor Oval to Woongarrah Oval No.2 due to the rain and this was an exciting match from start to finish. There was never too much in this encounter for the entire 80 minutes. Gosford took the early lead with a penalty goal to halfback Ben Shelley, and it took quite awhile before Hornsby responded with their first try. With that try Hornsby took the lead by 7 points to 3, but that was followed with an excellent try to Gosford after some good lead up play by centre Josh McGlynn. With this try to winger William Sharp, Gosford had taken the lead by 8 points to 7. It was definitely proving a see-sawing clash. It was then Hornsby’s turn to take the lead and with their second try just before halftime, Hornsby went to the halftime break leading by 14 points to 8. It was proving a high standard match and both teams were giving their all. Hornsby had several standout players. However none were better than flanker Tevita Puikala, hooker Hosea Fotukava, who crossed for 2 tries, and five-eight Sione Ala. Gosford had several good players including centre Josh McGlynn, halfback Ben Shelley and lock Chad Sneyd. The second half was a real battle. Hornsby increased their lead to 19 points to 8 but Gosford were not to be outdone. They responded with their own try and with scores at 19-15 the match was still very much up for grabs. The final 15 minutes proved very tense. However a late penalty goal and late try saw Hornsby home in what was a most entertaining match. Hornsby showed in this clash that they will be in action at the end of the season while Gosford put in another great performance but without getting the desired result.
Warnervale defeated Kariong by 26 points to 8 at Kariong Oval. In a match severely interrupted with a serious injury, it was the Warnervale team that proved the strongest on the day. Warnervale led in this match from start to finish. Warnervale led by 12 points to 3 at halftime and then continued on to record a quite comfortable victory. Best for Warnervale on the day were No.8 Jacob Griffin, and backs Jack Hogan, Mitch Riley and Brennan Jaymz. Kariong were best served by No.8 Josh Bottero, and centres Alex Rozario and Elliot Rozario.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with two excellent matches. Warnervale secured a pleasing victory over Kariong, while Avoca Beach recorded a win in their first competition hit out of the season.
