Round 5 of the Wyong Leagues Group Premier 1 competition delivered a blend of fierce defensive efforts, seesawing battles, and dominant second-half performances, as clubs now look toward the upcoming NSW Country Championships with momentum in hand. Terrigal and the Razorbacks remain unbeaten after another strong round of results, but every fixture this weekend offered compelling storylines.
At Heazlett Park, Avoca Beach edged out Northlakes/The Bay 23-16 in what was a tightly contested, sea-sawing battle. The match ebbed and flowed as one side would edge ahead only for the other to immediately respond. Both teams displayed structured play and gritty defense, but it was Avoca who held their nerve in the closing stages to secure the their second victory of the season.
At the haven, the home side were pushed to their limits in a defensive slugfest against Woy Woy, eventually running out 21-5 winners. For the first 70 minutes, the scoreline was locked at 7-0, with Terrigal’s only breakthrough coming from an early try to Jayden Woolley. A red card to Woy Woy for foul play changed the complexion of the game late, as Terrigal capitalised with a second try to Woolley and a late third to seal the win. Despite the result, Woy Woy should be immensely proud of their effort, having stood toe-to-toe with one of the competition’s strongest outfits for most of the match.
At Woongarrah, Warnervale and Lake Macquarie were locked in a tense contest throughout the first half, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock as the halftime score remained in single digits. It was Ratu Vero Suenisili who finally crossed for Lake Macquarie’s opening try, igniting their attack. In the second half, Rameo Bainivalu scored twice, helping the visitors pull away and secure a convincing 37-3 victory, although the margin belied the competitive nature of the first 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Razorbacks flexed their attacking power, thrashing Gosford/Kariong 87-12 at home. They were already in control by halftime, leading 33-7, with Robert Peden crossing for the opening two tries and setting the tone early. The second half became a showcase of their attacking depth as they ran in a barrage of tries to remain undefeated alongside Terrigal heading into next weekend’s NSW Country Championship.
Premier 2
Round 5 of Premier 2 saw Terrigal continue their perfect run, while Lake Macquarie bounced back in a hard-fought win and Avoca Beach impressed with a strong attacking display.
Terrigal remain firmly on top of the ladder, making it five wins from five after a dominant 62-7 win over Woy Woy. The ladder leaders ran in 10 tries in a clinical display of attacking rugby that reinforced their status as the benchmark in the competition.
Avoca Beach also enjoyed a strong performance, defeating Northlakes/The Bay 45-5. A standout in the victory was Liam Davies, who tallied 15 points with a polished all-round display that helped steer his side to a comfortable win.
In one of the standout fixtures of the round, Warnervale edged out Lake Macquarie 36-28 in a high-quality and entertaining clash. Both sides played with attacking intent, combining for a total of 9 tries in a free-flowing contest that kept spectators engaged until the final whistle.
TJ Teekafa was a key figure for Warnervale, delivering a solid all-round performance that helped guide his side home. His impact on both sides of the ball proved vital in what was a tightly contested affair.
Lake Macquarie, despite the loss, showed plenty of fight, crossing for four tries and keeping the pressure on throughout. Their attack looked sharp, but a few key moments went against them in the closing stages, denying them a chance to snatch the win.It was a quality match from both teams, showcasing the depth and competitiveness of Premier 2 this season.
Meanwhile, the Razorbacks continued their solid run with a 46-10 victory over Gosford/Kariong. Their mix of power and tempo is starting to build momentum as they stay in touch with the competition leaders.
Women’s Premier 1
Round 5 of Women’s Premier 1 delivered a powerful display from the competition’s top sides, with Avoca Beach, Lake Macquarie, and the Razorbacks all asserting their dominance in emphatic fashion.
Avoca Beach continued their blistering start to the season with a commanding 62-10 win over Northlakes/The Bay. The result keeps them undefeated after five rounds, firmly establishing them as the team to beat in 2025. Their structured play and attacking depth are proving too much for opponents to handle.
Lake Macquarie were equally impressive, putting 57 points past Warnervale in a one-sided contest. Their physicality and speed around the park were key, as they overwhelmed their hosts in a clinical performance that cements their spot among the competition’s front-runners.
The Razorbacks also lit up the scoreboard, running in 80 points against Gosford/Kariong. With a blend of power and flair, they’re finding their rhythm and now look like genuine contenders as they hit their stride.
Terrigal also notched up a strong 34-0 shutout of Woy Woy, showcasing their defensive strength and discipline in a complete team performance.
This round comes ahead of a big weekend for many players who will represent the region at the NSW Country Championships in Tamworth next weekend. With talent spread across multiple clubs, the Central Coast will be strongly represented, and the local competition is clearly producing players of representative quality.
Premier 3
Round results in Premier 3 saw a dominant display from most top-tier sides, but it was the clash between Avoca Beach and Northlakes/The Bay that stood out for its intensity and tight scoreline. In what has become the closest match of the season, Northlakes/The Bay edged out Avoca Beach with a narrow 5-0 win in a gritty, low-scoring contest that was a testament to both teams’ defensive efforts. Both teams sit 2nd & 3rd which highlights the contest they both endured on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Warnervale delivered a commanding performance with a 71-7 thrashing of Lake Macquarie. Their win was highlighted by Keenan Tufi’s impressive hat-trick, helping lift his side to the top of the ladder. Warnervale’s blend of pace and power continues to set them apart as the form team of the competition.
Terrigal also made a strong statement, dismantling Woy Woy 65-7. A standout performance came from Todd Atkins, who grabbed a rare hat-trick, showcasing Terrigal’s depth and attacking flair as they remain a major threat in the competition despite early round losses.
The Razorbacks continued their winning momentum, dispatching Gosford/Kariong 55-5. Their recent form suggests they are hitting their stride at the right time, with a series of strong performances stringing together what is now a solid winning streak.
