REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition, just after the midway point of this shortened season, sees interest building on what teams will make the Finals this year. All teams are competitive and all matches are being hard fought.
The Match of the Day at Mark Taylor Oval lived up to all these expectations. It was a wonderful game of rugby which saw Ourimbah defeat Hornsby by 32 points to 12. Despite Ourimbah getting away on the scoreboard towards the end of the match there was nothing between these two sides for much of the first 60 minutes. In fact Hornsby appeared to have the better of the first half and was playing some very effective rugby. Hornsby had the better of the opening exchanges and in fact took an early 12 points to nil lead in the match. As it turned out these two early tries were their only touch downs in the match but it did take the visitors a long time to get back into the match. Ourimbah did reply with the lone try to winger Jack Stonestreet before the break. It was a rugged first half and Hornsby may have felt they should have taken more points from it. Hornsby did go to the halftime break leading by 12 points to 5. It did take the Ourimbah a time to get back on level terms with Hornsby in the second half but gradually they asserted their control on proceedings. Ourimbah got stronger as the match progressed and were able to cross for a further four tries in the second stanza. It was a high standard match of rugby being put on display and both teams showed they will be a force this year. Best players for Ourimbah were lock Josefa Biu, five-eight Daniel Jones and prop Stephen Finley. Hornsby was best served by centre Brad Dixon, hooker Hosea Fotukava and lock Wes Faupaula. Ourimbah showed they have the firepower to go all the way this year but Hornsby also showed they are quite capable of doing the same.
The Lakes kicked a late penalty goal to secure a hard fought win over Gosford at Gosford Showground, winning by the narrow margin of 20 points to 17. Gosford took the early lead with a converted try to centre Josh McGlynn but it was The Lakes who gradually fought back and by halftime break had taken the lead by 17 points to 7. It seemed at that stage that The Lakes may go on with it but this was not to be. Gosford returned the favour with some pleasing rugby and by midway through the second half had locked the scores up at 17 points apiece. It was anybody’s match at that stage. It was the late penalty goal to The Lakes that saw them home to victory. The match was played in very boggy conditions and this did not lend itself to free flowing rugby. However despite this, the standard of play was excellent. Best for The Lakes were No.8 Va Talaileva, centre Tomi Kaati and flanker Reihana Hemopo. Gosford had several very good performers but none were better than centres Sam Underwood and Josh McGlynn, and flanker Ryan Conaghan. The Lakes maintain their position at the top of the table, while Gosford must win all matches from here on in to have any chance of sneaking into fifth position.
Avoca Beach displayed great form to defeat Woy Woy by 37 points to 12 at Woy Woy Oval. The first half was a quite even affair and scores remained quite close for much of the first 40 minutes. Avoca Beach did slip away slightly on the scoreboard just prior to halftime, to go to the break leading by 20 points to 12. Woy Woy scored all their points in the first half and actually led by 12 points to 10 well into the first half. But the further the match went, the stronger Avoca Beach became. Avoca Beach were able to post a further 4 tries in the second stanza to secure a quite comfortable victory. It was a good performance by Avoca Beach and one that will be noted by all opposition teams. Woy Woy gave it their all but just could not stop Avoca Beach in the second half. Best for Avoca Beach were lock Aidan King, flanker Bradd Sheridan, centre Alex Halls and halfback Finn Mitchell. Woy Woy had several good performers headed by flanker Corey Fleming and lock Joel Frazer.
Terrigal had a relatively easy win over Kariong at Kariong Oval, running out winners by 43 points to 8. Terrigal did not however have it all their own way in the first 20 minutes as both sides put everything into both their attack and defence. There was some rugged defence in particular from both teams and it did take Terrigal quite awhile to post their first try. However Terrigal slowly took control and by halftime had jumped to a handy 24 points to 3 lead. The match was all but wrapped up at that stage but the visitors continued the attack in the second half and were rewarded with a further 19 points in the second half. Kariong were rewarded with a late try to flanker Josh Bottero but the match was all sealed up at that stage. Terrigal, with the win, cement their spot at the top of the competition table, while Kariong remain winless at this stage of the season. Best for Terrigal were locks Joe Taylor and Will McDonald, centre Arana Taumata, and prop Nathan Simpson. Best for Kariong were No.8 Lachlan Peruch, lock Taylor Mildren and flanker Mitch Parker.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. In the best round of women’s rugby so far this year, all matches were hard fought and close. Ourimbah secured a one point victory over Hornsby, while Avoca Beach and Terrigal recorded wins in their respective matches.
