REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continued with some most interesting matches, but with most results going as expected.
In the Match of the Day Hornsby continued their good recent form and defeated Avoca Beach by 24 points to 18 at Mark Taylor Oval. Avoca Beach took the early lead with a try to hooker Fion Henderson- Foley, who continued to have a great game for the entire 80 minutes. However it was Hornsby who quickly fought back and was able to cross for two tries in the remainder of the first half. It was Hornsby who went to the halftime break leading by 12 points to5. There was obviously not too much between the two teams at that stage and both teams would have felt they were right in the match. The second half proved to be much the same. Both teams threw everything at each other but determined defence saw many tries stopped. The second half ended up all squared up with both teams scoring 12 points each in the second half to make the final score 24-17. So that first half lead of 5 points by Hornsby proved to be the same at fulltime. Both teams will take a lot from this match and both know they can improve and can threaten in the big matches at the end of the year. Best players for Hornsby were five-eight Sione Ala, prop Angus McQueen and halfback Ben Astley. Avoca Beach were best served by lock Aiden King, hooker Fion Henderson-Foley, and centre Josh Montgomery.
Ourimbah proved too strong for Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval but the home side went close to causing an upset. Ourimbah won by 38 points to 29 but the visitors were pushed all the way for the scores to end up quite close on the scoreboard at fulltime. The early stages in the match were quite even with neither team able to get ahead for quite awhile. It was Ourimbah who did jump ahead late in the first half and by halftime had jumped to a handy 21 points to 10 lead. At that stage it seemed Ourimbah would go on with it and record a handsome win, but it was not to be. In fact Woy Woy outscored Ourimbah to the tune of 19 points to 17 in the second half. The Woy Woy backline was proving dangerous every time that received the ball and it took Ourimbah all their experience to maintain their halftime lead in the second half. Best for Woy Woy were Enosi Siale, No.8 Joel Frazer and flanker Corey Fleming. Ourimbah had several good players but none were better then No.8 Rob Peden, who crossed for 3 individual tries, flanker Jarrod Grange and centre Tarnae Mahon. The win sees Ourimbah remain at the top of the ladder in what is proving a close race to the Minor Premiership.
Gosford recorded a comfortable win over Kariong at Gosford Showground running out winners by 43 points to 26. In what proved a see-sawing match, play went from one end of the field to the other for the entire 80 minutes, In a match played in quite warm conditions most players were enjoying the conditions and both teams were putting on a display of running rugby, with a total of 11 tries scored in the match – 7 to Gosford and 4 to Kariong. Gosford took the early lead with the opening try but there was not too much between the two teams early on. However Gosford were always in the lead on the scoreboard. Gosford had taken a very comfortable halftime lead of 24 points to 6 and that lead was enough for them to go on and win the match. Kariong actually outscored Gosford in the second half by 21 points to 19 but all the damage had been done in the first half. Best players for Gosford were centre Sam Underwood, halfback Ben Shelley and lock Chad Sneyd. Kariong were best served by halfback Aiden Chambers, No, 8 Lachlan Peruch and lock Taylor Mildren.
Terrigal returned to the winner’s list with a comfortable 68 points to 7 win over Warnervale at The Haven Oval. Terrigal were always in control and dominated play from the start to the finish in the match. Terrigal led by 35 points to 7 at the halftime break and continued in much the same vein in the second half. Warnervale went into this with an under strength team but Terrigal proved to be such a well drilled and strong outfit on the day. Best players for Terrigal were flanker Sam Kenny, five-eight Adam Danckert and flanker Tim Bowring. Warnervale had no answer to the structured play from Terrigal. Best for Warnervale were No.8 Cameron McNamara, who scored all his team’s points, flanker Harry Sexton and five-eight Mitch Riley.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. All matches saw some enthralling rugby. Hornsby, Terrigal and Ourimbah all recorded very important wins on the day.
