REPORT :
This round of Central Coast Rugby Union saw all four matches tightly contested. Played in windy and cold conditions, with some rain, all teams put on displays of some very good rugby.
The Match of the Day at Woongarrah Oval saw a hard fought fixture but Terrigal finished the stronger to run out winners by 31 points to 12 over Warnervale. The first half was a very even affair throughout. Warnervale started the ball rolling early on when they crossed for the opening try within the first 10 minute mark. It was just the start the home team wanted. However, Terrigal were very quick to hit back. Within a few minutes they had responded with their own try under the posts and the scores were very quickly locked up at 7 points each. Terrigal then crossed for their second try very soon after. The conversion of this try took them to a 14 points to 7 lead at the midway point of the first half. The reminder of the half was a real battle. Both teams had excellent periods of attack, but also periods of strong defence. Neither team was able to break through for any further points in the half. Terrigal were unable to get away to a bigger lead on the scoreboard while Warnervale could not get the try they required to square things up. The 14-7 scoreline at halftime was however a fair indication of the flow of the match to that stage. Terrigal centre Dylan Calabria was the visitor’s best player at this point, and he had crossed for both of Terrigal’s tries. Others to play well for Terrigal were halfback Sekope Maea, and inside centre Mark Koteczsky. The start of the second half saw both teams give it their all. It was Terrigal however who were able to get the tries. Terrigal worked their way to a 26 points to 7 lead midway through the second stanza and things were looking good for them. However, Warnervale were not to lie down. They were able to respond with their own through winger Mitch Riley after some excellent lead up play, and they also went close on a couple of other occasions. Warnervale had several very good performers. Prop Kevin McNamara had a good game. He made several strong charges. He was well supported by halfback Brenton Acreman, and outside backs Mitch Riley and Daniel Ford, who both crossed for a try apiece. The win sees Terrigal join Avoca Beach in equal second spot on the ladder, while the loss sees Warnervale joined by Woy Woy in equal fourth spot. It all makes for a very exciting second half of the competition.
Woy Woy hung on to defeat Kariong at Woy Woy Oval by 29 points to 24. It was a close scoring encounter throughout and although Woy Woy led for much of the match, the scores were always very close. Both teams scored 4 tries, so it was the goal kicking that was the difference on the day. Woy Woy had slightly better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to 12. There was nothing in the match whatsoever. Best players for Woy Woy were forwards Alifeleti Atiola, Matt Graham and Kane Burns. All three never stopped for the entire match. They were well supported by Blake Arahil, and Fokolulu Taumalolo, who alone crossed for three tries. Both teams scored the same number of points in the second half – twelve – but Kariong were simply unable to bridge that gap in the final 40 minutes. It was definitely not for the want of trying. They had several very good performers, but none were better than Robert Brown, who scored 2 tries, flanker Brent Bovis, and halfback Scott Hanley. Despite the loss, Kariong did gain 2 bonus points and that keeps them in distant touch of the Top four. They will need to do well for the rest of the season however. Woy Woy, with the victory, creep into equal fourth spot and keeps their hopes of a Finals berth alive.
Avoca Beach scored a close win over Gosford by 22 points to 19 at Gosford Showground. It was a pleasing performance by both teams, but it was the visitors who hung on for victory. Avoca Beach led by 14 points to 12 at the halftime break so it can be seen that the scores were so tight throughout the entire 80 minutes. Both teams had great chances of victory. Avoca Beach did have a player sent off very early in the first half so did have to tough it out one man short for much of the match. Best players for Avoca Beach were flanker Harrison Bowcock, while his fellow loose forward Liam Donsworth also had a good game and scored a try. Gosford tried everything in the second half to take the lead but just fell short. Best players for Gosford were Jackson Steinbeck, who crossed for 2 tries, veteran Adam Carlisle and Josh Reid. The win sees Avoca Beach maintain their second spot on the competition ladder while Gosford still trail the field. Despite the loss they will trouble all teams for the remainder of the year.
The Lakes scored a vital win over Hornsby at Slade Park and ran out winners by 34 points to 19. Played in cold and wet conditions, the rugby on display was excellent. The Lakes got away to a storming start, and within just over 10 minutes had jumped to a 17 points to nil lead. It really did seem ominous for Hornsby at that stage. However, both teams then scored a try each, and things on the paddock began to level out. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by 22 points to 7 and that was to prove a comfortable lead, but one the home team knew they could not relax with. The second half was a very even affair, in fact the scores in the final 40 minutes was locked at 12 points apiece. But that first 10 minutes in the match was all the difference. Best players for The Lakes were lock Matt Lanzini, while fullback Macui Raulini and winger Dylan Galvin both scored a double during the match. Hornsby, after the slow start, did play well. Their best players were flanker Ollie Jenkins, who was a tower of strength all match, Toby Forde and Sam White. The win by The Lakes was an important one, it places them just out of the Top Four and they can still maintain thoughts of a Finals position this year.
The Entrance played well in President’s Cup, but were defeated by Ourimbah at Joseph Banks Oval on Friday night. They were defeated by 26 points to 15 in an enthralling game of rugby.
The Women’s 7’s saw some exciting matches. Woy Woy maintained their unbeaten run, while Terrigal, Warnervale and Hornsby recorded some sound wins. This is developing into a close competition and the standard of rugby has improved rapidly over the first half of the season.
The U/19’s mid-season interchange with Newcastle Hunter finished up yesterday with some top class rugby played between the zones. The teams which embraced this interchange will be the better for it as the local sides return to our competition after the Long Weekend.
